Blessings abound! We are so blessed with the help, support, and love shown to assist the ministry of Jake’s Diapers as we are led along this path to help babies in need! We have received multiple offers of sewing help, and so we are pleased to compile this list of urgent needs that those blessed with sewing talent can help us with. (Personally, my sewing skills are limited to duct tape and a stapler, true story! We each have our own unique talents, and for that I am grateful!).
We have also had the honor of being invited to speak with a few different groups. Our next Cookies ‘n Cloth gathering is Monday, March 17th, 6 pm, at Alleluia Lutheran Church in Greenleaf. Coffee and cookies will be provided for this fun social event where we meet with the Quilting/Yarn Guild (all are welcome, even those like me with limited sewing talent! I’m bringing the cookies!). All are welcome!
If you’d like to help Team Jake by volunteering your time, talents or treasures to sewing, we’d love to have the help! We have found that in addition to cloth diapers, there are other urgent needs we can help with! We will also cheerfully accept donations of anything related to sewing (fabric, elastic, etc) and match it up with someone who has the gift of time & talent with your gift of sewing treasures.
Our urgently needed items are:
Burial Gowns: Simple gowns of white or light pastel (no bright colors), open to the back with tie closure. These are needed in sizes newborn to 5 yr old.
PATTERN FOR BURIAL GOWNS:
Here is a link to a hospital gown pattern (sizes child through adult) that could work for burial gowns – longer sleeves would be desired and could easily be added by adapting the pattern.
RHFH would prefer white or solid colored light pastels for this use…..I have not yet sewn this myself, so input is welcome!
Crib Sheets: To fit mattresses that are 24 x 39 inches
Blankets: Any size.
Cloth Wipes: These can be a variety of sizes, 8″ x 8″ is a good size.
Pillowcase dresses: Here are some hints from our friends at Sew for Real Hope for Haiti
PATTERN FOR PILLOW CASE DRESSES – use this link:
hints: 1. If purchasing bias tape, use “extra wide, double fold”
2. Very light pastels look dingy quickly, bright colors work best. Some groups have been tie-dying the white and pastel colored pillowcases. Cute!
3. All toddler and girl sizes needed. Don’t forget the older girls – king size pillow cases work well. Sew in the reg. pillow cases for the smallest sizes
4. Any yardage will work (flat sheets in fun colors are also a ood source of fabric.
5. Have fun with embellishments – put out a call for donations of trims, rick-racks, bias tape, etc. Avoid any choking hazards.
Pillowcase shorts (with elastic waistbands)
